Endodontic Treatment (Root Canals)

When the nerve of your tooth becomes infected, a successful root canal treatment lets you keep the tooth rather than having to pull it out. Keeping your tooth helps to prevent your other teeth from drifting out of line and causing jaw problems. Saving a natural tooth avoids having to replace it with an artificial tooth. The procedure, known as endodontic (root canal) treatment, is the process of removing infected, injured or dead pulp from your tooth. The space inside the hard layers of each tooth is called the root canal system. This system is filled with soft dental pulp made up of nerves and blood vessels that help your tooth grow and develop. When bacteria enter your tooth through deep cavities, cracks, flawed fillings or crowns, your tooth can become abscessed when the pulp is infected. If the pulp becomes infected, it needs to be removed or you may experience pain and/or swelling. Our digital x-rays also can detect the infection before it becomes a problem. If left untreated, an abscessed tooth may cause serious oral health problems.

To make the procedure comfortable, we have invested in a equipment that allows us to do the best work possible. With our local anesthetic delivery system, patients often do not even feel the injection! If you chose, you may also be sedated. A rubber raincoat is then placed and the tooth is cleaned out with a very smooth electric machine.

In addition, the infection is also rinsed out with an antibacterial solution. Finally, the canals are filled and sealed once the canals has been cleaned. In the end, a filling is placed to seal the opening. When all is done, most root canaled teeth require the placement of a crown.
